Caring for your Poinsettia

Never expose poinsettias to cold temperatures. A chilled plant will begin to drop leaves very quickly. An area of your house that stays between 60-70 degrees is ideal.

Very bright, indirect light is essential for proper growth and color retention.

Fertilizing: Fertilize at half strength unless attempting to rebloom.

Reblooming: While not impossible, there is a process to getting your poinsettia to rebloom in full color the following year after purchase. As color fades (March), cut back stems to around 8 inches and keep near a sunny window. Water and fertilize as usual. Around May, you should see new growth appear, once this is obvious you can repot if necessary. As long as night temperatures are above 60 degrees, you can set your plant outside over the summer - just keep it out of hot-direct sunlight. In July/August, pruned your plant to keep it compact and bushy but do not do so once September hits. Starting in October, place plant somewhere it will recieve complete darkness for 14 hours a day while staying around 65 degrees. Check daily and water when soil feels dry. Use fertilizer at full strength until plant is in full color then reduce to half strength. The key to success is following strict light-dark requirements.

Toxicity: Poinsettias should be kept out of the reach of pets and small children as they can be toxic if repeatedly ingested.
